About the Books:
India and Sri Lanka has a long cherished relationship since the Independence of both the countries. Sri Lanka’s ethnic crisis has put greater impact on India’s domestic politics and It’s relationship with Sri Lanka, and the South Asian and Indian Ocean region as well. Sri Lanka has always alleged India for its support to Sri Lanka’s Tamil ethnic groups against the government of Sri Lanka. This caused a major turmoil in the bilateral engagements. Accordingly, given distrustful relationship between two sides, this book focuses on India’s foreign policy towards Sri Lankan ethnic crises and the domestic and regional developments thereafter. One chapter in this book is on the genesis of ethnic crisis between the Sinhalese and Tamils of Indian origin in Sri Lanka and the consequent developments in the SriLankan domestic politics. On this background, keeping in view its national interests in the region, Indian government has framed its foreign policy. One of the major events in the bilateral relationship was the Indo-Sri Lanka Accord (ISLA) in July 1987. The book also thoroughly focuses on India’s foreign policy towards Sri Lanka before this accord. Moreover, a separate chapter thoroughly deals with India’s military intervention after the ISLA. The post-intervention developments brought strategic changes in India’s Sri Lanka policy.
The book also focuses on India’s major efforts in establishing peace in Sri Lanka. With the leadership change in both the countries, India’s policy stand also confined to moral support and India decided to abstain from direct intervention or involvement in Sri Lanka’s domestic politics. Consequently, Sri Lankan government could defeat the LTTE. After the demise of the LTTE and its leadership in 2009, India played very constructive role in rebuilding infrastructure in Sri Lanka. The book also focuses on the developments of the relationships between India and Sri Lanka in the post-IPKF period and the bilateral developments in the Post – LTTE periods. One chapter in this book also focuses on Cultural engagement between two countries especially during the Modi Era. However, due to trust deficit between two countries and Sri Lanka’s incessant fear of India’s pressure, Sri Lanka established cordial proximity with China. This development again became an issue of concerns to India in the region. Sri Lanka’s proximity with China fetched India’s anger against Sri Lanka.
